Andy Robertson believes Liverpool have rediscovered the defensive foundation that will sustain their season, following Tuesday night’s commanding 1-0 victory over Real Madrid at Anfield.
The Scottish left-back was effusive in his praise for what he described as a “massive all-round performance” against the reigning European champions, a result that extended Liverpool’s winning streak to two matches and reinforced their growing momentum in the Champions League.
Building Consistency
Speaking to Liverpoolfc after the final whistle, Robertson emphasized the importance of building on Saturday’s 2-0 triumph over Aston Villa, highlighting the consistency that has been missing from Liverpool’s recent performances.
“Really pleasing. Glad we built on Saturday, trying to bring that consistency back,” Robertson said. “I thought from minute one we were all bang there tonight and just carried on from Saturday in terms of being hard to beat, working hard for each other, always trying to help your mate out. Then I thought the quality was there as well.”
The Reds dominated proceedings throughout the encounter, though they were repeatedly frustrated by the exceptional goalkeeping of Thibaut Courtois, who produced a series of world-class saves to keep his side in the contest.
Déjà Vu Against Courtois
Robertson acknowledged the difficulty of breaking down the Belgian shot-stopper, who has made a habit of producing his best performances against Liverpool—most memorably in the 2022 Champions League final in Paris.
“You just have to keep going. Probably the lads who played in the final in Paris had a bit of déjà vu! He’s an unbelievable ‘keeper, exceptional, and he always seems to bring out his best against us,” Robertson reflected.
Despite Courtois’s heroics, Liverpool’s persistence eventually paid dividends when Alexis Mac Allister headed home the decisive goal on the hour mark, capping a period of sustained pressure that had seen the Reds create numerous opportunities.
“We believed that if we kept creating the chances we would hopefully knock it down eventually, and thankfully Macca popped up and got the goal,” Robertson added.
Defensive Foundations

While the attacking display drew plaudits, it was Liverpool’s defensive resilience that particularly pleased Robertson. Back-to-back clean sheets have provided the platform for consecutive victories, and the 30-year-old defender stressed the unsustainability of relying on outscoring opponents week after week.
“That’s where results start. Too many times this season we’ve had to score three goals to win games and stuff like that and you can’t keep doing that,” Robertson explained. “At the start of the season we were doing that well and still winning the games but that’s not sustainable. It’s sustainable when you win games with clean sheets and win 1-0 or 2-0 and things like that.”
The return to defensive solidity represents a significant shift for Liverpool, who have struggled with consistency throughout the campaign. Robertson believes the control demonstrated in recent matches must become the standard moving forward.
“It’s about having that control and I think we’ve got that back in the last two games. It’s important now that we have to be consistent: that was the message today before the game, we need the consistency back in the game, and I think we really brought that.”
Looking Ahead to Manchester
With confidence restored and defensive foundations reestablished, Liverpool now turn their attention to Sunday’s heavyweight Premier League clash at Manchester City. Robertson acknowledged the challenge that awaits at the Etihad Stadium but expressed belief that his side will travel with renewed confidence.
“We’ve got another massive game on Sunday and it’s going to be tough. We’ve put a lot into this week already and it’s going to be difficult, but we obviously go there with more confidence than we had last week so that’s pleasing,” Robertson concluded.
The match against City will provide the ultimate test of whether Liverpool’s recent improvement represents a genuine turning point or merely a temporary upturn. For Robertson and his teammates, maintaining the standards set against Villa and Madrid will be paramount as they navigate one of the most demanding periods of the season.
As the Reds demonstrated on Tuesday night, when defensive solidity combines with attacking quality, they remain a formidable proposition for any opponent—even European royalty.
